Everyone goes through this - it’s not just you.Graphic Design Intern – LiveNova – Dallas Until you have some seriously noticeable credentials, that’s how you’ll find work. That’s a start, but reddit isn’t really where professionals go. All things being equal, a personal recommendation carries a huge amount of weight in any profession. You need to know people who can get your reel in front of someone who can make a hiring decision. What you need to do is network, preferably not just online. I can teach junior artists the tech stuff - I can’t train their eye.īut don’t worry about any of that quite yet… “tuning” your reel isn’t going to change much. While you certainly need the technical skills, the visual skills are far more important. For as absurd as it sounds, that’s most of how artists judge things. ![]() It needs to be impressive, not just competent. To be candid, nothing really caught my eye. The good thing is, once you’re in, it’s much easier to get subsequent jobs.Īs someone who’s actively looking to hire some VFX artists for games, your reel is… ok. ![]() Yeah, it’s tough to break into the industry. Try to do your absolute best, don't include any "tests" or "exercises" in your reel unless they turn out absolutely gorgeous.įor example take a random video of artillery explosion and try to recreate it so it looks almost identical to real life, if it doesn't keep improving it till it does and only then put it into your reel and same with pretty much any kind of effect, if the vfx involves some environment then make sure the environment is photoreal or meets the quality standards, if you're not very good at texturing and lookdev in general it can be simply clay render environment and only your FX fully shaded and it even has benefits for doing that way like faster rendering and better presentation of the VFX overall. It seems like you understand Houdini itself, but still the "cinematography" and lookdev is very sub-par, FX is also lacking attention to detail. Judging by the previous reel you still need a lot to learn, I would recommend going through some Rebelway courses. ![]()
